Identity – it is how we define ourselves and how we are viewed by others. As Matthew begins his gospel he works to unveil the identity of Jesus. Before Jesus begins his ministry, he meets John the Baptist who has been preparing the way for the Messiah. John the Baptist is a fiery figure, calling for repentance in those seeking the Messiah. We should after all be working to keep our heart and actions, our identity, aligned with God at all times.
John instantly recognized Jesus who came to be baptized by him. It is interesting that Jesus the son of God sought to be baptized himself. And here is our #growthpoint – in baptism Jesus identifies with the sinful humanity that he came to save. He met us where we are. And through baptism, the sinful world is connected to it’s saving grace, Jesus the son of God.
